A desmid course was held in Uppsala in September 2001 organized
by the Department of Environmental Assessment at the Swedish University
of Agricultural Sciences in cooperation with the Nordic Phytoplankton
and Periphyton Group (NPPG)* . Dr. Peter Coesel, Institute for
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics at the University of Amsterdam
was invited as a course leader.
Altogether ca 100 desmid species were identified from fresh material
sampled in the littoral and pelagial zones of four boreal lakes
in the county of Uppland, Central Sweden. A selected number of species is illustrated below. The digital pictures were taken by Roland Bengtsson, Tore Lindholm,
Kirsten Olrik and Eva Willén from both fresh and preserved material.
